It’s 2015 and I just bought my first elliptical trainer, the AFG 5.3AE, then on sale at Canadian Tire. I fell in love immediately. After a few months, though, I found that after driving 70 minutes to get home it was a little tough to get back in gear again. Being in the Canadian Forces I had access to an amazing gym at work. So for a few days I started using the ellipticals there. There are about thirty machines in the elliptical room with about five different models. After trying all the different types, I realized just how much better my AFG 5.3AE was than even the “professional” models. I went back to my machine and never strayed again.

Advance the clock. It’s 2021, my ex partner has my old beloved elliptical, and I want another to shed some COVID weight. I look at the current model from the same company the Horizon 7.0AE (Horizon owned AFG and recently started putting its own name on the machines). The old AFG machines came in three models, the 3s, the 5s and the 7s. The 3s had the cheaper frame and 23lb flywheel. The fives had the heavier frame and 30lb flywheel. And the 7s had the same frame as the 5s but with improved electronics. The current incarnation, though, the Horizon 7.0AE, even with the “7” designation, has the same frame as the old 3s did. Only a 23lb flywheel. Really disappointing.

So, after a wait, I have finally found one of my beloved AFG 5.3AEs second hand and I’m buying it. The AFG 5.3AE requires an actual cord to connect its speakers to your phone, and it doesn’t have bluetooth. But its control panel is actually really well designed and it gives you a lot of options, including a constant-watt workout I find mimics real life inertia amazingly well. And best of all, it’s self contained. You don’t have to sign up for a privacy-invasive online service, and your elliptical won’t try and sell you video personal trainers or get you to pay monthly fees.

If you can find one, scoop it up. Horizon seems intent on adding bling and chintzing out on the basics of the machine itself. In the end it’s not flashy electronics that make up your workout. It’s a strong frame, good stride, realistic flywheel, and versatile workouts. After all, you aren’t pedaling your machine’s screen.

+ PROS: 30lb magnetic resistance flywheel 20 incline settings 20 resistance settings 20" stride Lots of built-in workout options Self-contained electronics Device (phone/tablet) holder Speakers (requires headphone jack) Built-in fan Workout tracker for two primary users and a guest setting.
    - CONS: No bluetooth Interface is somewhat dated
